Struggling to Find My Voice

4/19/2024

Q:
I'm
out of the normal flow of life. I feel like I don't have an opinion on anything, and even the smallest of words disgusts me because it's like I've said something out of compulsion, but I don't really know how to respond

A:

The reasons behind feelings of emptiness and a lack of motivation can vary widely, encompassing a spectrum that includes, unfortunately, symptoms of certain mental health disorders. Therefore, it's imperative to first and foremost seek guidance from a mental health professional, such as a psychiatrist, to rule out any underlying medical causes.

Once health-related factors have been addressed, it's worth delving into your own values and preferences. Reflect on what truly matters to you, what constitutes an integral part of your identity, and what sparks your interest and motivation. Even in moments when it seems like nothing comes to mind, consider this as merely a dusty window that hasn't been cleaned in a while.

Take notice of past experiences that attracted you, motivated you, and brought you joy, particularly moments that evoked a sense of exhilaration or "goosebumps." What moments would you like to relive? What emotions and states would you like to reexperience? What dreams did you have as a child? What captivated you? As you recall and list these, listen to yourself and the responses of your body. Your body will likely react with excitement to certain things, indicating genuine interests and aspirations.

Think of your internal exploration as akin to the work of an archaeologist, carefully excavating valuable fragments during digs and gradually piecing them together to form a comprehensive picture. Each memory, each emotion, each dream is a fragment, contributing to the mosaic of your identity and guiding you toward a deeper understanding of yourself.
